TITANS WIN TITLES AT CAJUN TOURNAMENT
The Ascension Titans wrestling club crowned seven champions to go with six silver medals and eight third place finishes. An additional six wrestlers placed fourth in the USA kids wrestling tournament held Saturday at the Lafayette High School Gymnasium. Over 500 wrestlers competed in the season opener, which featured competition in six age groups from 4-15 years old.
Lathan Vaughn became the youngest champion in the nine year history of the club by winning the Pre-Bantam 41 lb class. Vaughn is a 5 year old competitor who won three matches. Other champions for the Titans included Kaleb Faul, Novice 120 lbs, Taibe Coleman, 84 lb Schoolboy, Jared Templet, 105 lb Schoolboy, and Matthew Hamilton, 120 lb schoolboy. Dallas Chenevert Cadet 84 lbs, and Zack Hill Cadet 215 lbs also won championship matches.
Second place finishers included Bantam 50 lb Michael David, Novices Nick Harper 75 lbs, Trey Mayer 85 lbs, Jordan Averett 112 lbs, and Sheldon Juneau, 130 lbs, and Schoolboys Jamal Vaughn 112 lbs. Bronze medalists were Bantam Kendall Faul, 55 lbs, Novices Brennon Wax, 80 lbs, Justin Acevedo 90 lbs, Hunter Hill 100 lbs, Dustin Vice 112 lbs, Schoolboys Jacob Averett 84 lbs, and Cadets Austin Gravelle 125 lbs, Chanse Kendrick 135 lbs.
Finishing fourth were Dillon Vice (Midget 70), Anthony Coleman (Novice 70), Matthew Mire (Novice 85), Jack Young( Schoolboy 132), Chris Thompson (Cadet 119), and Travis Hasselbeck, (Cadet 215). The Titans will be in action on February 23 at the Crusader tournament at Brother Martin, then return home for the Titan Open USA Kids Wrestling Tournament scheduled for March 1 at the Cap Elite Center in Baton Rouge. Some 800 wrestlers from Louisiana and surrounding states are expected to vie for the 75 titles in all six age groups in the tournament scheduled to begin at 9:00am.
